Abstract

The aim of this series of lessons is to illustrate the state of the art of RFID technology and the way it is allowing the Internet to reach out physical objects, paving the way to a new scenario for the future Internet that is the so-called "Internet of Things". We will discuss the status of commercial deployment of Internet of Things technologies and the open research issues that cross cut all themes of information and communication technologies and industrial engineering.

Syllabus

Brief introduction to RFID technology, from the physical level to the global information system (4 hours)
The state of the art of commercial RFID technology: main products and solutions, main players, size and segmentation of the market, standards, successful and less successful applications (2 hours)
Why expectations on the boom of RFID technologies were not met and why research on RFID is still strong in industry and academia (2 hours)

The Internet of Things: the integration of RFID, sensor network technology and the Internet, a vertical theme in ICT and industrial engineering (4 hours)
