Aims

This series of lessons is designed to provide an overview of various aspects of RFID (radio frequency identification) tags and systems. Fundamental aspects of link budget and backscattering characteristics of RFID tags will be reviewed. The fundamental issues of RF matching from ASIC to tag antenna will be discussed. Basic test methods to characterize the RFID tag will be introduced with examples.

Syllabus

  • Introduction of basic RFID system
  • Basic RFID link budget calculations
  • Discussion of RF front end circuit and considerations of RFID chip (ASIC)
  • Discussion on RF impedance and its measurements on ASIC
  • Techniques and discussion of RF matching from ASIC to tag antenna
  • Fundamentals and understanding of backscattering principles in RFID
  • Complete design, simulation of RFID tag
  • Near-field antenna considerations for RFID tags
  • Test and characterization methods of RFID tags
  • Examples of existing tag products and applications
