Computing Resources
The research lab of the Transmission Systems Research Group at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa is equipped with an internal LAN linked through the backbone LAN of the Department to a 140 Mb/s MAN that in turn connects several sites within the town of Pisa.
The computing resources are based on a cluster of 16 UNIX based HP workstations and a cluster of 4 Pentium IV based PC. The HP cluster is composed as follows.
Software Tools: SPACE
The simulations and computer-aided evaluation of communication systems are performed by using the simulation package SPACE (Software PAckage for Communications Engineering). This is specialized software tool running on UNIX graphic workstations equipped with the X11 library xlib, developed by the Transmission Systems research group to aid the design of advanced digital transmission systems. Specifically, SPACE belongs to the last generation of user-friendly time-domain simulators of transmission systems, and is basically composed of collection of about 250 routines containing the code of the signal processing modules corresponding to the different blocks of a modern communication system (filters, linear and nonlinear modulator, encoder and decoders, typical channel models and so on.) .
